SPR’s Eliza May elected as Vice Chair Board of Managers of Central Health
We are proud to share that our strategic collaborator and consultant, Eliza May—an accomplished leader in Austin’s Latino community—has been reappointed to the Board of Managers for Central Health and elected as Vice Chair.
Eliza has been with Saldaña Public Relations since 2023, where her work has focused not only on supporting clients but also on strengthening the broader Austin community through meaningful partnerships and advocacy. News of May’s reappointment is just the latest example of her dedication and ability.
May was recently elected Vice Chair of the Board of Managers at Central Health and was reappointed to a four-year term by the Austin City Council in the beginning of this year. She is only the second Latina to hold the position, adding to a long list of leadership roles dedicated to improving not only health outcomes but also the overall well-being of the Latino community.
May has previously held leadership positions in the Susan G. Komen organization, the Komen Leadership Council, the Retired State Employees Association (RSEA), the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GAHCC), Hispanic and Business Leaders of Austin (HABLA), and the city’s Hispanic-Latino Quality of Life Commission.
Whether working with Saldaña PR or at Central Health, May describes her work by stating, “It’s totally personal for me,” noting that her goals are shaped not only by her own experiences but also by the needs she sees every day across Austin.
At Central Health, her passion and expertise have been reflected in her efforts to identify funding within the organization’s budget to keep key programs running amid reduced federal assistance.
“One of the programs that was cut was what they call the promotoras,” said May. This program trains members of the Latino community and healthcare workers to help build and maintain relationships of trust between the Latino community and healthcare and social services. May explained, “At the local level, we ended up subsidizing some of these programs so that they could keep going and keep signing up people [for insurance].”
At Saldaña PR, May brings her leadership experience with Central Health together with years of state government expertise, having served in various executive capacities. Her seasoned perspective helps ensure that the SPR’s strategies and guidance address not only immediate challenges but also create long-term impact for our clients and their communities.
Her vision for Central Health reflects that same commitment. When asked what a successful first year as Vice Chair would look like, May expressed her hope that the organization will be able to care for the whole person, not just respond to urgent needs. Her goal is for Central Health to offer “a whole, seamless opportunity for patients to get their services and increase their access to healthcare.”
We are proud to have Eliza May on our team, as her mission centered approach and dedication to the Austin Hispanic community, state government and nonprofit organizations provides our team with invaluable expertise.
