Hispanic Heritage Month is over — now what?
Hispanic Heritage Month put culture and diversity on center stage, but now that it’s over, you may find yourself wondering, “How do I continue to show my support for the Hispanic and Latino community now that this month of remembrance and celebration has ended?”
Every year from September 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month reminds us of the beauty of Hispanic and Latino cultures, as well as the hardships and sacrifices that generations past have endured to be able to enjoy this annual event. It is both a celebration and a stark reminder of a history that could repeat itself if people don’t rally together beyond a single month of remembrance.
Here’s how you can continue supporting Hispanic and Latino communities and show a commitment to a people whose culture and identity today is under fire.
Educate Yourself
The first, and perhaps most important, way you can continue showing your support for Hispanics and Latinos is to educate yourself on their history in the U.S. It is important to learn about the struggles, achievements, and contributions both of these communities have made to American society as we know it today.
From significant contributions to the civil rights movement, to being pioneers in space exploration, and even bringing us fan-favorite musicals, Hispanic people and Latinos have become ingrained in our history and integral to shaping our society today.
Support Hispanic- and Latino-Owned Businesses
Latino-owned businesses have become one of the fastest-growing segments of all U.S. businesses. While shopping locally is already known to boost the economy, supporting the local and growing number of Latino-owned businesses also helps create a more inclusive local economy and allows for growth and opportunity to be shared in a more equitable manner.
A good way to find these local businesses is by referring to your local Chamber of Commerce or Latino and Hispanic Chambers of Commerce, where available.
Take Bystander Action
Last but not least, taking action in everyday situations is a powerful and symbolic way to show support for the Hispanic and Latino population. Taking action can take many forms, including speaking up when you encounter discrimination or unfair treatment, or challenging misconceptions and stereotypes when you see them.
For a community and culture experiencing unprecedented hardships in the U.S. today, it’s important to approach being a supporter with empathy and a willingness to create positive change. The type of change needed today requires a large, unified voice—and by taking simple steps such as these, you can help show others that support can come through seemingly small, everyday actions.
